Woman 'kept dogs in filthy cages at home'08:00 - 09-July-2008 The 34-year-old pleaded not guilty at Forest of Dean Magistrates Court in Coleford to eight different counts of causing unnecessary suffering to 19 dogs and puppies. They were confiscated by the RSPCA and police from her cottage in central Lydbrook. She has since moved to Wales. District Judge Simon Cooper was told that despite being taken directly to the vets, two of the rescued Utonagan puppies, which are bred to look like wolves, died that day. Martin Prowle, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said the death of the dogs was significant due to the conditions they had been found in, and the short amount of time between when they were removed and when they died. He said: “The results of the postmortems supported that they were suffering due to the conditions they were kept in.” Mr Prowle called RSPCA officer Gary Lucas, who visited the home and authorised the removal of the dogs on November 8, 2006 to give evidence. Mr Lucas said: “The untidiness and smell is what we first noticed when going into the house. “The smell of ammonia, faeces and urine hit me immediately and the further we went in the stronger it became. It began to affect my eyes. “All the windows were closed and there was no ventilation. “The cages the puppies were kept in were standard size, but the bedding material was dirty, wet and had dried faeces in it. “There were rubbish bags in the compound at the back of the house. They were piled up, and contained chicken bones and faeces wrapped in newspaper.” He added: “My view is that this did not accumulate over a day, but had built up over days and weeks.” The case continues.
